You'll learn to understand and combat the critical issues placing a growing strain on the earth’s natural resources such as climate change, human impacts, and the biodiversity crisis. Ecosystems and Biodiversity Major When you study a major in ecosystems and biodiversity your degree will focus on ecology, ecosystems and conservation practices. Offered within the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management degree, this major will enable students to study a variety of courses across the core science alongside their specialisation in ecosystems and biodiversity studies. In your first year will learn foundation theory in the core sciences of biology and chemistry, focusing your major around the study of cells, molecules, atomic structures, and the chemistry of carbon compounds. You will also be able to enrol in courses covering Earth as a combination of dynamic components or systems. Second and third year will see you tailor your ecosystems and biodiversity major to produce a degree that is dynamic, and matches your career goals. You can study more advanced courses in biology and chemistry, as well as a specialisation in ecology or conservation management of Australian flora and fauna. What do you learn in an ecosystems and biodiversity major? In the ecosystems and biodiversity major you will study courses in areas such as: Ecology: Students will have the opportunity to specialise their major in ecological studies. You will study courses which will teach you about populations, considering if population movements are dynamic or respond to changes in the environment. Ecosystem Processes: Through courses in microbiology, environmental economics and animal behaviour students will learn about different types of ecosystems in which populations live. You will consider how populations interact with natural processes governing their environment, and how species relate to each other to make up an ecosystem. Conservation and Management: Courses in the conservation management of flora and fauna will teach you about developing strategies to protect wildlife. This will be taught via Australian case studies, research projects and fieldwork.
