The PhD is a University-wide degree which involves an intense period of supervised study and research, culminating in the submission of a thesis. The degree is awarded to candidates who, through original investigation, make a distinct and significant contribution to knowledge in their field or topic of specialisation. Course structure Candidates are required to complete a thesis, under the supervision of appropriate members of academic staff. Candidates may also be required to undertake some coursework in research methods and/or theoretical knowledge in the core fields of study. During their candidature, students' progress is monitored via assessments and regular progress reports. Candidates are also invited to participate in other research activities. Careers Graduates can find careers in academia, as a researcher, research fellow, research associate and an expert in their chosen area of research.

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised master's by research or bachelor's degree with first or second class honours (division 1), or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate research studies. The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must: be an international student (not an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia); and meet all admission requirements for the selected postgraduate coursework program by the closing date of the scholarship application; and commence full-time studies on campus (Sydney). On campus studies include face-to-face and/or online (remote) learning applicable to all degrees except online degrees and distance mode degrees.; and have completed a Bachelor degree, comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree, no longer than three (3) years prior to commencing at UTS and be admitted based on this qualification to UTS; and have an overall average of 90% where the pass mark is 50% or equivalent in a UTS recognised Bachelor qualification; and all applicants must apply using the UTS online Scholarships Application form to be eligible; and Must not: be studying a UTS online degree or distance mode degree; or be a government sponsored student; or be a recipient of another UTS scholarship for the duration of this Scholarship. On campus studies include face-to-face and/or online (remote) learning, applicable to all degrees except online degrees and distance mode degrees. Number of Recipients: Up to two (2) new recipients will be awarded the scholarship annually. A maximum of one (1) recipient will be awarded in each of the Autumn and Spring intakes.
