Pursue your passion while pursuing a degree. Take your place in the creative community as a trained professional who understands how art influences society. Then use the expertise and business know-how you’ve gained during the four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts to change opinions, translate experience, instill pride and inspire joy.
The interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts has four distinct majors—Arts and Cultural Management, Studio Arts, Music Theatre Performance and Theatre Production. In this unique degree, you learn to manage artistic practice—your own or others’—while developing a depth of knowledge and expertise in your chosen discipline. Led by award-winning faculty, who are both scholars and practitioners, you gain insight into the changing needs of the creative and cultural industries.
Diploma Exit
You may choose to exit the Bachelor of Fine Arts with a diploma after successful completion of the first 60 credits of your major.
All students apply for admission to the degree program.
Our Spaces
Allard Hall, purpose-built for the fine and performing arts, is a commanding presence in downtown Edmonton and a neighbour to the city's premier and small theatre companies, the downtown arts district, museums and other cultural and creative venues. You learn in the perfect classroom, both on campus and in the community.
Creative campus
At Allard Hall, you work alongside student-artists who are passionate about acting, singing, sculpting, painting, dancing and performing.
Your Future
As a creator, or as a manager of an arts organization, you influence the world around you, changing opinions, translating experiences and thoughtfully critiquing and embracing social systems.
All levels of government fund artistic and cultural endeavours. Skilled artists and arts managers are supported federally through the Canada Council for the Arts, provincially through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and municipally through arts councils across the province. Welcome to the intellectual and creative community, where you bring joy, interaction and inspiration.
Professional associations
Among the career opportunities that are open to graduates of the BFA, some are well established, organized and served by a union or professional association that connects the artist to the marketplace and aids with working conditions and wage guidelines.
Here are some examples:
Actors are represented by the Canadian Actors Equity Association (CAEA)
Theatre technicians and artisans may be members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE)
Professional visual artists may join Canadian Artists’ Representation/ Le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC)
For Arts and Cultural Management Major Currently, you can choose to complete the first two years of this major through online study. Work has begun to develop the third and fourth year for online delivery, a process that will take several years.
For now, if you start with online studies, to continue with the degree, you will likely need to attend classes in person at MacEwan University in Edmonton for your third and fourth years.
If you decide to exit the program after the second year (60 credits), you receive a diploma credential.
