Master of Science with specialization in Medical Physics (Oncology)

The Department of Oncology offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. Applicants with the MSc degree, or a strong undergraduate record, may be accepted directly into the PhD program. Admission to the MSc is dependent on the recommendation of the Graduate Coordinating Committee. Within the first year of registration in the program, the student's supervisory committee makes a formal recommendation on the candidate's potential for graduate work. At this time, students may in certain cases be permitted to change program category to a PhD program if their progress should warrant such a transfer. Program Requirements: Students are required to complete a minimum of ★34 in coursework and a thesis. Coursework: All coursework except BME 320 or BME 321 must be completed in the first year of the program ONCOL 550 - Medical Radiation Physics ONCOL 552 - Fundamentals of Applied Dosimetry ONCOL 554 - Laboratory in Medical Radiation Physics ONCOL 556 - Laboratory in Imaging ONCOL 558 - Health Physics ONCOL 560 - Technology in Radiation Oncology ONCOL 562 - Theory of Medical Imaging ONCOL 564 - Physics of Nuclear Medicine ONCOL 566 - Radiation Biophysics ONCOL 568 - Physics of Diagnostic Radiology ONCOL 600 [A] and ONCOL 600 [B] BME 564 - Fundamentals of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI One of BME 320 or BME 321, to be completed any time during the program. Thesis: Registration in 900-level THES. Ethics Requirement: Students are required to meet the FGSR Academic Integrity and Ethics Training Requirement. Residence Requirement: The minimum period of residence is two four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta. Length of Program: The minimum length of program is two years, depending on the research undertaken. The maximum time to complete the thesis-based MSc program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is four years.
