This course is primarily for candidates who have not studied the pre-requisite subjects needed for first year entry, not met their expected entrance requirements due to adverse situations, a mature student returning to education or a care leaver. It is a one year course which will enable you to progress onto the first year of your chosen degree course, provided the relevant progression criteria are met. Our foundation course is taught in-house by University staff. As a student on the course, you will be a full member of the University, with the same access to the Students’ Union, clubs, societies, sports facilities and support departments. You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. During the year you will undertake core modules in applicable mathematics, physics, structure and reactivity, synthesis and spectroscopy, biological systems and disease, and living organisms: variation, population and environment.Completing a foundation year can be a real attribute to your overall degree success. It not only opens doors to courses that may have previously looked closed but also provides a sound base on which to establish a successful academic career. Many who have completed the foundation year have also said how beneficial it was to them in supporting their transition into university life.

The School of Science is offering the Women in Science Bursary (£1000 per annum) to women applicants to assist them to pursue their studies at Loughborough, and help them develop as future scientists working in industry or academia. Applicants to any of our undergraduate degree programmes in Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Natural Sciences, are invited to apply.
Priority will be given to applicants from underrepresented groups (including black and ethnic minority students, those with a disability, caring responsibilities, refugee status, or from low participation areas).
Bursary holders will have the chance to work voluntarily with current Women in Science ambassadors in the School of Science to further the engagement of women in science. There will be an opportunity to become a paid student helper, and each bursary holder will be mentored by a senior woman staff member in the School, who will guide their development throughout their course.
