As well as gaining an in-depth understanding of your subject, you will also be a competent practitioner who is able to lead health, safety and wellbeing improvement in the workplace. You will develop legal, technical and scientific knowledge to enable you to recognise, assess, and problem solve risks. You will understand health and safety in high-risk industries including agriculture, construction, transport, and manufacturing, and will be able to develop an organisation's safety and wellbeing policy, respond to accident and ill health reporting, and improve your negotiation, advocacy, management, leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
All course tutors are practising consultants and have strong links with professional bodies, which ensures that you will be studying the latest developments and practices. Many are also active in research and you will be encouraged to undertake research which will be recognised within the industry.
Teaching
How will the MSc/PGDip Occupational Health and Safety and Wellbeing Management be taught?
You will do practical work in the form of workplace visits, risk assessments and laboratory simulations, as well as attending lectures, workshops and seminars. You’ll explore the theory in lectures – some of which are given by external specialists - and apply it in seminars through group work, discussions and problem-solving exercises based on real-life scenarios. Case study evaluations and discussions with professionals will further consolidate your understanding. In workshops you’ll learn how to use equipment, including occupational hygiene and noise monitoring equipment, and carry out inspections, audits and assessments.
You will also do your own independent study and make use of online learning resources, including professional databases and Health and Safety Executive campaign sites. The Unihub also has interactive exercises, links to external sources of information and podcasts, and a message board for discussions.

The need for occupational health professionals has never been greater and this course will equip you for a wide range of roles in areas such as occupational health, occupational hygiene, risk management and consultancy, both in the UK and abroad. A very high percentage of our students go into jobs directly related to the course.
You will be encouraged to take up employment opportunities during your studies so you are able to view job roles through the occupational health an safety perspective. We will build on your experiences to embed wider understanding of safety practice. Students can progress into the MSc after successful completion of the PgDip.

For this course, we consider your application based on: A 2:2 honours degree or above, Previous professional H&S qualification, Three years of relevant work experience, A ‘pass’ in an appropriate mathematics Level 2 qualification is recommended. The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components). TOEFL (IBT): 87 (with at least 21 in listening & writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading).
